Blog : Your shallowest help will hold me up afloat
Posted on 2016/3/26 10:02:21

I am not a graphic artist. I have no formal training, and I do not believe I am very good at graphic design or art direction. Sometimes, I stumble on something I like. I have two books on my desk, both at home and at the office, which are collections of the BLUE NOTE RECORDS album covers. The design aesthetics are so amazing and simple. The color choices, the framing, and even the negative space (I donít know fully if I am using that term correctly).

I stumbled on a set of images I liked. Silhouettes with film icons instead of heads. Iím fairly certain that is not an original thought or image. Donít care, still like it. The idea strikes me as slightly abstract and since I have no direct purpose for these, that seemed appropriate.

Once I got to six different images, I put them on a plane and toyed with the looks, like a grungy layer on top. I went with a red scheme for no reason I can consciously think of. I have been studying color schemes, relationships, and patterns for the past 10 years. I sometimes snap a pic of a book cover or old movie poster when I see them if I like the colors or design.

What are these for? I have no idea yet. Could be for Sonnyboo Podcast, or possibly something on FRAMELINES. I started using the puppet tool and animating the characters slightly, moving some limbs, arms, legs, etc. So far, I just used these images to update my Facebook/Google+ banners. They might get used on DVD covers or a book jacket or something. Who knows?

I enjoy toying with images, animation, video, and design sometimes. It relaxes me to delve into something not knowing the why or how at the outset.

ĒI notice that my opponent is always on the go
-And-
Won't go slow, so's not to focus, and I notice
He'll hitch a ride with any guide, as long as
They go fast from whence he came
- But he's no good at being uncomfortable, so
He can't stop staying exactly the same

If there was a better way to go then it would find me
I can't help it, the road just rolls out behind me
Be kind to me, or treat me mean
I'll make the most of it, I'm an extraordinary machineĒ
- Fiona Apple
