Peter John Ross article in the newest issue of MOVIEMAKER MAGAZINE

moviemaker

Here is an article I wrote about "four walling" in the annual GUIDE TO MAKING MOVIES 2010 for MOVIEMAKER MAGAZINE, now available in print on newstands!

The article is about screening movies effectively (and respectfully) for all those involved. So many times have I seen other people's movies screened without several technical considerations taken into account, and in the end someone winds up looking bad. I wrote this article to help people understand what goes into a screening and how to avoid mistakes that disrespect all the people who helped make the movies being shown.

I hope this article helps anyone planning on doing their own screenings in the future!

I got tickets to the AVATAR sneak preview screening of 16 minutes of footage in IMAX 3D. For those not in the know, James Cameron, director of TITANIC, TERMINATOR 2, ALIENS, etc. has not made a movie in 12 years since sweeping the Oscars. Now he has returned with a science fiction opus that many industry insiders have said will completely change the game on how movies are made and distributed because of how awesome the 3D is in this. Since it’s about 60% all CGI with alien characters and a strange planet, and 40% real sets and actors, it seemed like it was possible. I’ve been excited since I first heard about this film 4 years ago.

Lately I’ve been on an unintentional INDIANA JONES kick. I watched RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK a day or two before seeing CRYSTAL SKULL. I intended to watch all three of the movies, but after RAIDERS, I didn’t really have any interest in the other two.

Here’s something that gives me pause. I already know that most filmmakers have the business sense of a 9 year old (the ones who have NOT run a lemonade stand that is), but why am I shocked at the amazing demonstrations of their ignorance?

In the not too distant past, the dream of every filmmaker was to get into the Sundance Film Festival, and with that golden ticket came the studio deal for the feature, an eventual limited theatrical run, and then a real career was made.

Last year’s writer’s strike caused an interesting thing for FOX’s show 24, which I love dearly. Now, the reason I enjoy the show is because I immediately stop worrying about the concept being “24 hours” and “real time”. If realism will destroy your enjoyment of a fictional show, then this ain’t for you. I got into the show on DVD a few years ago because Scott Spears tipped me off that Buy.com had season one on sale for $15 including shipping and for a 6 disc set, that’s cheaper to buy than it is to rent, plus I could sell it for that amount at a used DVD store.

Personal politics aside, I think OBAMA will win. It's not about my choices or preferences, but simply the mathematical numbers.

Ever since Doc Hayward (Warren Frost) & Mrs. Sarah Palmer (Grace Zabriski) appeared on Seinfeld as George Costanza's soon to be parents in law, the Ross', I often wondered if there was a connection between Seinfeld and Twin Peaks.
