I’ve been asked to speak at FilmDayton later this month. I’m prepping a presentation with powerpoint and videos. I did something similar in Cleveland a couple months ago, specifically on directing. I’m going to come up with something different, but hopefully interesting. I like these speaking engagements, although I haven’t been doing them that often lately. Got the new graphics card installed. It entailed putting my motherboard in a new case, getting a new power supply, just to power the video card because it is huge. I lost some USB 3.0 ports, a much larger case, making it harder to reach the back, etc. I did get another 3 terabyte internal drive, so that means I have 9 Terabytes of internal storage and over 20 Terabytes of external storage always connected to my home edit system. And I only have about 3 Terabytes of free space right now.

Not seeing nearly the speed increase I thought I would, but then again I am still working in Adobe Creative Suite 6, not the Creative Cloud. I think the move to Creative Cloud is inevitable now. My graphics card is on the official CUDA card list in Adobe CC, and with it, aside from Analog video capture, I will have little use for my Matrox MX02 setup at home. Funnily enough, the Matrox MX02 is no longer supported in Adobe CC from last month, and yet they have a workaround that allows it to still be used.

I found a 2 Terabyte hard drive in my closet, labeled closet. It had a lot of raw footage and final edits on it that I had not seen in some time. This includes the raw 4K R3D footage from my 2009 short ACCIDENTAL ART, shot on the original RED ONE. I decided to try to open this thing up since I have an opportunity to work with a colorist with DaVinci Resolve. I had never exported the movie in 4K. Back in 2009, I knew that would be a while off. Here we are 7 years later, and I’d like to remaster the film and put it back online in full 4K UHD resolution.

I’m spending way too much time on old projects. It means I am itching to do something new, something different. I’m still not back to making a narrative piece, even something 2-3 minutes long. I just cannot narrow down to something I need to say. Some ideas are percolating. Nothing has solidified into “I have to make this right now” or anything.

An old feature length movie idea has danced with being a real project, but only one full draft was ever written and it was not at all close to what I wanted (no offense to the writer, as that was a failure to communicate on my part). I have been refining an outline for almost a decade. I might actually tackle a draft soon, just to do it.

“Young and full of running
Tell me where’s that taking me?
Just a great figure eight or a tiny infinity
Love is really nothing
But a dream that keeps waking me
For all of my trying
We still end up dying
How can it be?
Don’t say a word, just come over and lie here with me
‘Cause I’m just about to set fire to everything I see
I want you so bad I’ll go back on the things I believe
There I just said it, I’m scared you’ll forget about me”
