2014 wasn’t stellar for the big Hollywood studios (or indies). 2015 will be a huge box office year. At a minimum, one studio will dominate over all others by a longshot. Disney owns Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm. In 2015, they intend to unleash some of the most predictable blockbusters of all time. In May, we have the AVENGERS sequel, after the first one grossed way over a billion dollars and ranks 3rd all time highest grossing film of all time. Joss Whedon, my personal jesus, is back writing and directing, taking on a GODFATHER II/EMPIRE STRIKES BACK approach to his sequel I can bet the house that Joss will kill the box office records of the first AVENGERS, with ease. I can only hope for a nearly 3 hour epic and everyone will lap it up.

All of the “Phase 2” Marvel movies have out grossed their originals. IRON MAN 3 almost caught up to the first AVENGERS with over a billion at the box office. This ain’t rocket science to predict that the sequel, packed with superheroes new and old will bring in the bacon for the studio.

And I would have predicted it to be the highest grossing film of the year hand down except JJ Abrams is delivering unto the world a new STAR WARS with THE FORCE AWAKENS. A George Lucas-less STAR WARS will update the storytelling for the current generations.

The sentimentality of the original trilogy cast making appearances make these a much safer bet than the prequel trilogy, along with the aforementioned absence of George Lucas. Hey, I don’t have the deep hatred most have for the prequels, and I especially don’t begrudge George himself. There is so much assumption and misinformation about George Lucas’ business and creative decisions, all of which can be contradicted by facts from interviews, books and documentaries. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not gonna defend the Prequels either. They aren’t great, but I don’t feel like my childhood got raped.

The first film I ever saw in the theater was STAR WARS in the summer of 1977. I am still a little ambivalent about this sequel. Lawrence Kasden, you’re my only hope. Lawrence Kasden, you’re my only hope. Lawrence Kasden, you’re my only hope.

In the end, there is no doubt that STAR WARS THE FORCE AWAKENS will beat AVENGERS AGE OF ULTRON at the box office, but who really cares? The mouse house gets ALL the money.
